Prevalence of temporomandibular disorders in fibromyalgia and failed back syndrome patients: a blinded prospective comparison study.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and evaluate psychosocial domains in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) compared with patients with failed back syndrome (FBS). STUDY DESIGN: The study included 51 (32 FM and 19 FBS) adult patients who were administered orofacial pain and psychological questionnaires before a clinical examination. Presence of TMD was diagnosed according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. RESULTS: Fifty-three percent of the FM patients reported having face pain compared with 11% of the FBS patients. Of those FM patients who reported face pain, 71% fulfilled the criteria for a diagnosable TMD. FM patients had significantly higher subscale scores for somatization, obsessive-compulsive, medication used for sleep, and fatigue compared with FBS patients. Eighty-seven percent of the FM patients reported a stressful event and 42.3% had symptoms indicating posttraumatic stress disorder. CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of TMD and psychosocial dysfunction among FM patients suggests wide-reaching dysregulation of autonomic and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis functions.

Coexistence of fibromyalgia, temporomandibular disorder, and masticatory myofascial pain syndromes.

The purpose of this study was to determine the association of fibromyalgia (FM) with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and masticatory myofascial pain (MMP). Thirty-one consecutive women diagnosed as having FM according to American College of Rheumatology criteria and 21 consecutive women diagnosed as having TMD were included in this prospective study. All patients were examined by a dentist and a physiatrist to identify the coexistence of FM and TMD. In the FM group, TMD was found in 25 (80%) patients, and only 6 (19%) patients had arthrogenous origin with MMP, whereas 19 (81%) patients had only MMP without arthrogeonous orgin of those 25 women exhibited TMD. In the TMD group, the prevalence of FM was 52%, which was significantly higher in those with TMD of arthrogenous origin with MMP. Our results indicate that coexistence of FM and TMD with MMP is high. Pain and tenderness in the masticatory muscles appear to be an important element in FM, so in some patients it may be the leading complaint.

Juste une réflexion.
Deux publications qui indiquent une corrélation entre ce qu'on appelle fibromyalgie et pathologie atm. Du pain béni pour nous.
Personne ne contestera la pertinence de ces études, elles ont passé le cap des comités de lecture et résisteront sans doute aux méta-analyses.
Et pourtant, ce n'est jamais qu'un lien statistique. Il n'est pas prouvé du tout que l'une est cause de l'autre. Ce qui apparaît est une concommittance relativement évidente, d'accord, mais c'est tout.
Il y a un lien entre les pertes de connaissance et la dégénerescence de la vue... mais on sait qu'il y a un diabète déséquilibré derrière, responsable des deux et que l'un ne dépend pas de l'autre.
C'est la même critique que je formulerais à l'encontre des approches posturo : pied oeil and co. Des dysfonctionnements d'effecteurs cohabitent, mais est-il prouvé que l'un a entraîné l'autre ?
L'archiduc est arrivé et la bombe a explosé... mais non, ce n'est pas l'archiduc qui a posé la bombe.
La preuve passera par l'expérimentation.
J'ai un NVG normal chez mon patient, étudiant en dentisterie, motivé. Je lui colle une surcharge compo sur 32 et j'enregistre à h, h+1, h+2, h+3, ... Trismus au boulot !

pour être completement sur tu devrais faire l'inverse,rajouter sur tes dents meulées et voir si la fibromyalgie revient!
